AA Launches Black Box Driver-Tracking Insurance Policy

The AA has announced that it is to introduce a new insurance policy which uses black box technology to track good and bad driving habits.
The new policy has been designed to reward good drivers which cheaper insurance policies. As part of the AA Drivesafe policy, all drivers will pay an average amount at the start of the policy but will have the potential to reduce the payments within 60 days if they drive safely.
The insurance policy requires the installation of black box technology into the driver's car which will use satellite technology to track and record key driving monitors such as braking, accelerating and speed. The data will then be used to calculate a premium - all drivers will pay by direct debit so payments can be adjusted according to behaviour throughout the year.
The AA Drivesafe policy is currently available online at www.theaadrivesafe.com with a range of insurers. Installation of the black box is included in the premium and drivers can log on to the internet to monitor their performance throughout the duration of the policy.
The new policy is likely to appeal to younger, inexperienced drivers who are currently being forced to pay sky high car insurance premiums. The Drivesafe policy could also appeal to female drivers who are facing more expensive premiums this year following last year's EU ruling.
'At present, young women can expect to pay up to 40 per cent less than their male peers for car insurance. Although young men are statistically more likely to have a serious crash than women, that doesn't mean that all men drive aggressively. Similarly, some young women also take risks when they're behind the wheel. A Drivesafe will identify the safest drivers and reward them,' commented AA director Simon Douglas.
